Group situations can present many challenges for children with ADHD. If behaviors are not addressed properly, the group experience may quickly deteriorate and become a negative one for this child and the other children within the group. Children with ADHD want to succeed, make friends, and do well in group situations, though they often have a difficult time doing so. Your approach as a teacher or coach can make a big difference in a child’s experience. Cathi Cohen, director of In Step Mental Health and author of several books on social skills training, outlines some simple tips for caregivers in her book, Outnumbered; Not Outsmarted! An A to Z Guide for Working with Kids and Teens in Groups. If a child with ADHD is part of your group, you can take the following steps: Accept That ADHD Is a Genuine Disorder Before you can help an ADHD kid, you must first believe that ADHD is a genuine brain disorder that results in unintended behaviors and consequences. You need to understand that ADHD is neither a reflection of a childs character nor of his intelligence or upbringing. Adults who believe that ADHD is a made-up diagnosis may think the childs behavior is willful and caused by a lack of discipline or poor parenting. These adults are going to handle their interactions with an ADHD child very differently than those who recognize the disorders impact. It takes a mature, patient, calm adult leader to manage an ADHD child in a group setting. Focus on Positive Channeling The key to working successfully with the ADHD kid is to focus on strengths and provide opportunities for learning. ADHD kids are energizing. They are often passionate, enthusiastic, and active children. Take the time to catch the ADHD child doing good things, and compliment her. While the standard punishment model of discipline may be appropriate for some kids, it generally backfires with the ADHD child. Channeling her behavior in a positive manner reduces the odds that misbehavior will occur. Adjust Your Expectations The ADHD child is approximately two to three years behind his/her peers in emotional maturity. This can be confusing for adults, especially if the ADHD child is physically large for his chronological age but behaves several years younger, socially and emotionally. Adjust your expectations accordingly. Give One-Step Directions Many kids with ADHD have trouble following multi-step directions. It may be fine for you to tell most kids to make their beds, sweep the floor around their bunk, and hang up their wet towels after swimming. However, if you give the same set of instructions to an ADHD kid, he might remember to make his bed, but will most likely get distracted and forget the rest of what he was supposed to do.s Ask About the Parents Method of Discipline Parents of ADHD children generally know what works and what doesnt work when disciplining their child. Check in with the parent for guidance. Help the ADHD Child Switch Gears Slowly ADHD children respond very well to predictability and structure, so they appreciate knowing the routine in advance of the situation. Give the ADHD child time to prepare to switch gears when activities are shifting. React Calmly Because ADHD is a disorder of self-control, ADHD kids may do and say things that they dont mean. Their impulsivity results in their inability to hold their tongues and restrain their actions. It takes a strong adult to refrain from taking the bait and retaliating with punishments and reprimands. Correction Strategies Encourage rather than criticize.Tell them what you want them to do (not just what not to do).Refrain from accusations.Catch the child exhibiting positive behavior.Shape behavior through praise.Move closer to the ADHD child when you want his/her attention.Ask the ADHD child to do small errands/chores to redirect negative energy.

Repeating words or sentences from lessons or homework, is one way to move information from short term to long term memory. As well redoing math problems or homework, which is a great way to better recognize how something is done, or should be done after getting the wrong answer. In addition reviewing notes or homework with a buddy can improve the knowledge of the subject, by having a buddy show the correct answer to the questions or notes that were wrong. Finally the last way of being able to fully understand what has been taught is by reducing the amount of notes taken. Decreasing the size of notes taken can help long term memory skills by reviewing less, and giving the most important information needed. Through having the most important information memorized, for tests or quizzes, this will allow for easy recollection of material learned and will give the correct answer. In conclusion by following the practicing and reviewing methods given, it will ensure full comprehension of the information learned. Motivation is a big factor in student success because motivation drives us to do many things not only at school but at home as well. Motivation can help us succeed at school because it can drive us to take that extra mile in anything we choose. An example of this is if you’re in English class and asked to write a minimum of 3 paragraphs. While most people will do 3 paragraphs, a motivated person will write 5 paragraphs and earn a 90% instead of an 80%. Motivation can be used at home also. An example is if you have a test coming up but don’t want to review until the day before the test. Although this is common for many people, a motivated person will review their notes several days before the test. This is because that person is motivated to be successful and they know that by sacrificing a couple hours each day, they have a greater chance at being a successful student. It’s a fact that students who attend school regularly learn more and are more successful in school than students who do not. People who attend school regularly learn to accept responsibility, an important lesson for a successful life. People who develop good attendance habits in the early grades will be more likely to continue them throughout their school career, as well as into their chosen career. Regular attendance is critically important, because students who miss school miss out on the exposure of course content. As a result, the student is more likely to fall behind, and miss important socialization concepts that enhance the ability to understand and follow directions or, ultimately, plan for the future. Just by being present at school, the student is learning how to be a good citizen by participating in the school community, learning valuable social skills, and developing a broader world view. Learning social skills is just as important as learning history, math, science, and English. To summarize, in order to achieve learning and/or a desired goal, a student must be ready to practice, be motivated, and have proper exposure to every detail of the course content in order to be successful in achieving the best process of learning. Lena Horne Lena Horne Lena Horne was born on June 30, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents were Teddy and Edna Scottron Horne. After her father left her at the age of two in order to pursue his gambling career; her mother leaving soon after that to pursue her acting career; she went to live with her grandparents. Through her grandparents influence she became involved with organizations like the NAACP, at an early age. In 1924 she went back to live with her mother, traveling and being schooled all over the state until she was fourteen. At the age of fourteen she decided to drop out of school and go to work. Because she was talented and light skinned it was not hard for her to find a job. She became a chorus girl in Harlem's Cotton Club where blacks entertained a strictly all white crowd. At that time she was making about $25 a week. It was here that Lena got to meet and observe now famous artists such as Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Ethal Waters, and Billie Holiday. At the age of nineteen she met and married Louis Jones. Together they had two children Gail and Teddy (who later died in 1970 from kidney failure). While trying to get used to raising a family and having a career, she received a call from an agent, who had seen her at the Cotton Club, about a part in a movie. Her controlling husband allowed her to be in "The Duke is Tops" and also the musical revue "Blackbirds of 1939." When she finally got up the courage to leave Louis, he deiced to take her son away from her. Page 2 She lost custody of Teddy when the divorce was final and has always regretted not fighting harder for her son. After her divorce she began singing with Noble Sissie's Society Orchestra. Through out their tour she had to endure harsh racism having to sleep in tenement boarding houses, the bus and even once in circus grounds. Soon after that, she toured with Charlie Barnet's Outfit and became the first African American to tour with an all white band. She was their feature singer and considers this to be the beginning of her success. Lena decided to head out to Hollywood and see what she could do out there. She began singing in the Trocadero Club where she met one of the most influential people in her life: Billy Strayhom. Billy Strayhom was the chief music-writer for Duke Ellington. Lena has always felt that she and he were soul mates, despite the fact that he was gay. At 76 she sang a forty minute set at his funeral. While singing in the Trocadero Club she was discovered by MGM. Being a strong believer in equal rights she demanded a contract. Right then Lena earned her place in African American history as "the first African-American actress in history to sign a long-term contract with a major film studio." (AMC) Lena began to emerge as the first pinup girl for African American GI's. Also she was the first African American actress to be on the cover of a movie magazine, Motion Picture Magazine 1944. Lena Horne married a white musical arranger in 1947. His name was Lennie Page 3 Hayton. They kept their marriage a secret for three years because of the controversy over interracial marriages. When the marriage finally came out in the open, the couple was bombarded with numerous threatening letters. The couple was married for 24 years when he died in 1971. Devastated by his death; she moved in with her daughter. It wasn't until three years later when Tony Bennett convinced her to return to show business that she did any performing. In 1981 she put on the performance of a lifetime. Her one women show entitled "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" ran for fourteen months straight before she took the production on tour. She has always been a strong believer in equal rights. Lena has actively participated in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Council of Negro women, the Delta Sigma Theta sorority and the Urban League. Lena often offered her time singing and speaking at rallies and conventions in support of equal rights. One of the advancements she is most proud of is an honorary doctorate she received from Howard University in 1980. "?I had been offered doctorates earlier,' she said, ?and had turned them down because I hadn't been to college.
